Overview

Your punt page, built and maintained

This is your personal, compact, build-your-own-punt-page system, and its maintainer. It builds a full set of default buttons with some unique features, then lets you add your own rows of custom presets and MAtricks modifiers seamlessly, taking the pain out of adding to and maintaining a punt page.

Seven plugins wrapped into one punting system: two builders, two runtimes where the magic happens, an Adder for putting whatever you want on the page later, one for maintaining gradients, and one for removing things or uninstalling completely.

Scroll to Cool Features and just give it a glance. I think even veteran LDs will find it interesting.

What it builds

A complete punt page on YOUR showfile

  • Position / Color / ColorFX / Movement / Zoom / Gobo / Prism / Frost across 8 Types, built in.
  • The full Color Brain color system with mode buttons and 68 gradients.
  • DimmerFX waveform × pattern masters.
  • Per-layer look stash and recall, with live status tiles.
  • FX Capture for manual FX and flyouts.
  • Saved-look snapshots.
  • Custom buttons poured from presets you already own.

Cool Features

The buttons you'll actually live on

Color mode buttons

Normal, Line, EO, S and Big S. Same color buttons, completely different look across the rig. Have fun experimenting with those.

Gradients

Press the same color twice for a random gradient. Red twice triggers a Warm gradient, blue a Cool one, yellow a Neon, and White/CTO/CTB one of the color-temp gradients. With Half-Sat active, a double press gives you a pastel gradient. Pretty freakin' cool.

Layers

Everything you punt is stored in the active layer as variables. Switch layers, keep punting, then recall the exact look you had on the other layer. It even comes with readout boxes so you can make out what's sitting in each one.

Save Look / Replace Look

So, so, so useful. Save Look stores the active layer as a tile in the snapshot area (not a cue, but a snapshot of every variable your buttons set), so one press refires all the correct punt buttons. Replace Look overwrites a saved tile: build the look, press Replace Look, tap the tile you want gone.

Export Look

Takes everything in the active layer and builds it onto any cue you specify, using recipes. You can now program songs with your punt page. Congratulations.

Load & Go

No more pulling rate masters down to punt in blind. Press once and your buttons buffer on the active layer without firing. Press again and the whole look fires at once.

Surprise

Randomness with a little bit of control. Gives you a randomly generated look, with the control buttons underneath setting how far it goes: Subtle / Normal / Chaos.

Manual moves & flyouts, no phasers

With FX Capture, click two positions to set the high and low of some follow cues. Turn on Manual FX and it runs between them with delay from the modifiers next to the button. It looks like a phaser but it isn't, which means you can run movement phasers on top of it and get some genuinely unique stuff.

Slow / Normal / Snap

Scales the crossfade time across the whole punt page by adjusting fade times on every cue in every sequence. You also nominate a speed master in the config menu before building, so you keep global speed control there too.

Filter menu

Filters for the All Types button and the Manual FX sections, so you can exclude a type (your downstage wash, say) from being controlled by the punt page.

Growing it later

The System Adder

One plugin for anything you want to add after the build. It finds free pool slots itself, down where the builder ran, so it can't collide with your show. It checks everywhere it's about to build, and if anything doesn't check out it rolls the whole thing back and leaves nothing behind.

  • A whole new category of buttons (New Bank): point it at a preset range and it becomes a type-aware punt category: 8 sequences, a button per preset labelled with the preset's name, an optional Off, and its own layout row with working appearance switching.
  • One button (Add Preset to Bank): for a newly made position, gobo, anything at all. Run it, type the category, give it the pool and preset, and it adds the cue to the stacks for every type, creates the punt button and drops it on the layout for you to drag where you like. Appearance switching is already taken care of. Your layer buttons see it immediately. Save it, export it, it works with Surprise.
  • New MAtricks (Add Pattern): tell it which MAtricks to add and you get a new pattern button for your phasers. Leave the name blank and it uses the MAtricks label. Name a custom bank to target just that one, or leave it blank and the button drives all your custom banks, plus buttons to add it to any of the built-in categories.
  • A whole new type (Add Type): enter a new group and it adds an entire 9th, 10th, whatever set of sequences for every attribute, including the custom ones you've added. Layers, save buttons, Surprise: all working immediately.

Add your rainbow color preset to the ColorFX bank and it goes into every Type ColorFX sequence, automatically creating Rainbow-Line, Rainbow-Sym, Rainbow-Random, Rainbow-Block and so on for every built-in and custom pattern you have. They're separate cues on purpose, so you can fade naturally between them. No swapping MAtricks and re-cooking live, no snaps and loading bars from doing it the “MA2 way”.

Maintenance

Keeping the gradients right

The 68 gradients are color-aware: their base colors reference the color presets you tune. New day, new lights, fixture counts change, and you're re-matching your color presets as part of your daily duties anyway. Once you've finished touching your colors, run the gradient updater and it rebuilds all 68 from scratch with your adjusted values and the new selections, so they're going to look great no matter what.

I've wasted so much time trying to get magic presets to work since release. They're simply unreliable and break too easily. This is a hard-coded method you can trust to work every time. If it can't read one of your color presets it stops before writing and tells you which one, which usually means the full-sat / half-sat pool numbers don't match your show.

I advise turning on blind for this one.

System Manager

See it, trim it, patch it, remove it

  • See what's installed: the manager prints everything the system has built to the system monitor.
  • Remove a custom bank you added with the Adder, without touching the rest.
  • Uninstall: one button deletes everything the builder created, and nothing else.
  • Relabel Types: re-labels the Type Select buttons in the layout with the groups they're actually using. Re-run it any time the contents of your groups change and you want the labels to match what you're selecting.
  • Patch: the important one. It lets me roll out fixes and updates without you uninstalling or re-running the builder, so you don't start over after moving buttons around or adding your own. Drop the new scripts into your plugin folder, re-import, then hit Patch. An info box tells you what changed and whether any other script needs re-importing.

Before you build

What your showfile needs first

The builder uses these. It doesn't create them. Pool numbers are configurable; the defaults are in brackets.

  • 8 contiguous groups (Groups 1-8), one per fixture type, or whatever you want them to be really.
  • 14 full-saturation color presets (4.1-4.14) in this order: White, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Sea, Cyan, Lavender, Blue, Violet, Magenta, Fuscia, CTO, CTB.
  • 11 half-saturation color presets (4.20-4.30), the same list minus White, CTO and CTB.
  • A color release preset: every generated ColorFX phaser steps color → release, so fixtures fall back to whatever the color picker is holding underneath.
  • Dimmer waveform presets for DimmerFX (pool 1, preset 20, 14 items, though this will be different for everyone). Their names are read off the desk and become your waveform buttons.
  • Dimmer at 100 and Dimmer at 0 presets (1.1 / 1.2) for the manual flyout.
  • Position / Movement / Zoom / Gobo / Prism / Frost presets in the standard pools (Position 2, Gobo 3, Color 4, Beam 5, Focus 6).

Install

Four steps

  1. Import the two runtimes. Punt Recall goes into a plugin-pool slot named exactly Punt Recall, Color Brain into one named Color Brain. The punt buttons call them by name, so these labels are critical to everything working properly. Everything else can go in any slot.
  2. Import the Config Panel and the System Builder into any slots.
  3. Run the Config Panel. It populates the layout view you specified. Click each button to set where your items live and which slots are free, then press the red Build button to enable those config settings.
  4. Run the System Builder. Before writing anything it checks every number range it's about to create for overlaps with your show. On any problem it lists what's wrong and builds nothing.

You get the punt page on the layout you chose, plus a small group-blocks input GUI on the next layout up for quickly modifying the groups and blocks MAtricks the builder creates.

Build in a separate file first and don't save until it's the way you want it. If something looks wrong, read the system monitor. It'll have clues. And tell me as soon as you find something that isn't working right.
